How do I become a Black Mage in ARR?
You need to be a Thaumatuge (30) and Archer (15) First! If you’ve met these requirements, you can return to the Thaumaturge Guild in Ul’dah to get your quest to obtain the “Soul of the Black Mage”. In FFXIV ARR, becoming a job is as simple as equipping the required Soul.
What’s the Black Mage playstyle?
Black Mages still use the Umbral Ice / Astral Fire mechanic. The five skills unlocked are mainly for utility. Convert gives you a deeper mana pool, allowing for longer burst sequences with Astral Fire. Apocatastasis and Manawall are nice defensive skills to have (Manawall being extremely useful in both PvE and PvP). Freeze is a great AoE CC.
Ultimately, only Flare “changes” your playstyle a bit. It basically functions as a second Transpose, giving you three stacks of Astral Fire immediately but does burn all your mana.
What are good Black Mage stats?
You’re still going to want as much INT as you can get. The only other remotely useful primary stats are PIE and VIT. Regarding secondary stats, I’d think CRITICAL CHANCE is slightly better than SPELL SPEED. The idea is you want to maximize the damage out of every fire spell you cast, and not run out of mana even quicker with a faster cast time.
What are the Black Mage Traits?
As of now, there are no advanced job specific traits. You inherit all Thaumaturge traits you’ve already learned.
What are the Black Mage Skills?
Aside from the skills below, you may use any skill you’ve learned as an Thaumaturge. Bards also have access to some Pugilist and Archer skills.
Patch 2.1 changes:
- Freeze - Potency has been increased to 100 from 20. Cast time has been reduced to 3 seconds from 3.5 seconds.
|Sacrifices 20% of maximum HP to restore 30% of MP.
Cannot be executed when current HP is lower than 20%.
|Covers a designated area in ice, dealing ice damage with a potency of 100 and binding enemies that enter.
Additional Effect: Grants Umbral Ice or removes Astral Fire
|Increases a Disciple of War or Magic party member's resistance to fire, ice, and lightning by 30%.
Cannot be reused on an individual for 60 seconds from when the effect wears off. Cannot be cast on self.
|Creates a barrier that nullifies two physical attacks.
|Deals fire damage with a potency of 260 to a target and enemies near it.
Additional Effect: Grants Astral Fire III or removes Umbral Ice Duration: 10s
How many cross-class skills can I use?
When choosing advanced job, the amount of cross-class skills you may equip decrease to a total of 5 (as compared to 10)
Do I have to level up Black Mage separately?
No, your EXP in Black Mage rises as you level up your Thaumaturge class.
