FFXIV Pugilist / Monk Stats & Materia Guide

What’s a good pugilist stats build? What are useful monk stats? Pugilist / Monk materia? If any of these questions brought you here, you came to the right place. Whether its by stat allocation, gear or materia, knowing what stats your Pugilist or Monk need should never be far from mind!

Pugilist (PGL) & Monk (MNK) Stats

What are the pugilist or monk stat weights?

STR > Critical Chance > Determination  > VIT  > Skill Speed > DEX

*These may vary slightly from patch to patch, or by personal preference. Following the recommendation above will always give you a good PUG & MNK build.

Pugilist (PGL) & Monk (MNK) Primary Stats Allocation

What stats should I add as a pugilist or monk?

STR > VIT > DEX

Since this is where people may mess up the most, I’ll explain it in word for word. When you allocate stats, put as much points into STR (Strength) as you can. If you cannot put any more points into STR, place points into VIT (Vitality). If you cannot put any more points into VIT and/or STR, invest in DEX (Dexterity).

Strength – Stat which increases your damage output the most.

Vitality – Increases total HP. Never a bad thing to have, considering everything else has almost no use to you.

Dexterity – Again, if you ever need to take another stat aside from STR or VIT.

Pugilist (PGL) & Monk (MNK) Secondary Stats

What are good secondary stats for pugilist or monk, and why?

Critical Chance > Determination  > Skill Speed

While you can’t allocate this directly, these will be heavily considered when picking gear upgrades and slotting materia.

Critical Chance – The most basic choice for increasing DPS.

Determination – More Damage, and could possibly benefit second wind.

Skill Speed – Reduces GCD, resulting in more damage.

Monk stat choices are very simple right now. You want as much damage as you can get. *Mahiko’s Note: I’m thinking skill speed may be more important than Determination, and may even benefit more than Crit for monks. However, I won’t personally make that recommendation until more numbers are crunched.

Pugilist (PGL) & Monk (MNK) Materia

This is directly related to the first section. As you may know, all gear has a limit for each stat it can have, the higher its Item Level, the higher amount of stats it can hold. So the idea is to max out (or get close to maxing out) the left most, and work your way right. Again:

STR > Critical Chance > Determination  > VIT  > Skill Speed > DEX

Materia Name
STR: Strength
VIT: Vitality
DEX: Dexterity
Critical Chance: Savage Aim
Determination: Savage Might
Skill Speed: Quickarm

Summary:

  • Overall PGL MNK stat importance: STR > Critical Chance > Determination  > VIT  > Skill Speed > DEX
  • PGL MNK Stat allocation: STR > VIT > DEX
  • Secondary stats for PUG MNK: Critical Chance > Determination  > Skill Speed

  1. It’s not a horrible guide but FF14 needs a guide section similar to WoWs that tells you how to play your class best. I agree that points should all be allocated to strength but if your a player who struggles a bit and can’t avoid the hits then using some alternative stats can help out. This can also be something to recognize on gear as well. Accuracy however can be a very important stat playing any DPS class and why after strength and crit it should be recognized. Vitality stats may not show on much of the early gear but it’s on basically all the high end gear so you won’t be needing to pay attention to it as much. Strength of course will be your first stat and crit secondary but you should probably mix if not added as a third stat use accuracy. You may not notice as much but your DPS classes can miss in high end dungeons and raids and when you have to pull off a limit break you don’t want the off chance you’ll miss.

    1. I held off on these types of guides late into 2.0 because 3.0 was going to come out and ‘change the game’. expect these very soon. (Before alex hard comes out)

  2. Don’t mind this hater above Mahiko this is a very good guide. I was thinking of doing a pugilist in the near future. I found this guide very helpful.

  3. First of all, it’s PGL. Not PUG. One would assume that the most fundamental knowledge of the class would be standard for someone claiming to know enough to write a guide on the subject.

Second, you can spend all of your bonus skill points on STR, and shouldn’t even consider wasting one on either VIT or DEX.

Third, you should remove this guide, because it’s contributing to the sea of bad players that already exist in this game.

    Thanks.

    1. Hello van.

First of all, the guide says exactly that. Spend all points on STR. Did you even read?

First: Why did we bother with mentioning VIT or DEX? The very fact stat allocation caps are in place, we may someday need to have a choice between different stats.

Second: Will we ever need to choose stats besides forced penta-melded gear? Maybe not. But the fact it may exist one day means it’s important enough to put up on this guide. In fact, the aforementioned penta-melding is where you can come across this choice, so yes there is a need to discuss other stats, no matter how small the percent of the population may need it.

Third: I will not remove this guide, because it serves a purpose to many, maybe not you.

      Thanks.

  4. Upon reviewing your comment and the post… I can’t determine what you’re talking about. Unless you’re viewing some strange cached version of the page…

    1. Ty for doing what you do. I am on Shiva and I have all classes to 50 except arc and white mage. I am monk as main and I used all strength stats. I found the skill speed is a close second after strength. I seem to do more damage then when I had gone critical hit crazy. I m looking forward to the gear guide for pugilist. I am new to the new coil but have done well with t1 thru t5 do you think it would be worth it to switch to another world. I am currently on EU/Shiva and I live in north America. I play all the time but find that finding a good party seems almost impossible for the end game stuff. Was thinking of transferring to another and do you have any recommendations. Again ty for all that you do
