3.2 UPDATED! SCH Best in slot guide! “Sorry I was Cleric”. SCH Lore buy order, Melding, Pages & Normals, more!

Hello fairy abusers! If you’re wondering how to squeeze every drop of value from your Scholar – look no further! Welcome to our Scholar BiS guide for Heavensward! Let me preface this guide by saying thanks to our resident Scholar Giggly Giggles! The SS option was made by me, and should be taken with a WHM bias PoV, haha.

Quick stat summary: CRIT > PIE > SS =?= DET

For the sake of “interchangeable filler slots”, Savants <-> Gordian serve as natural replacements to each other (May or may not be discussed within guide, but take that as an ‘unspoken truth’).

Accuracy Column: Here are the melds for the pieces specified above:

Chest: with 5x ACC IV’s | Belt: with ACC IV x 3 – PIE IV x 2 | Boots: can cap ACC with ACC IV x 4 – ACC III

Ring (or any accessories you may want): can have 2 possible melds: (Fits 24 ACC/CRIT, 20 PIE)

  • VIT IV – VIT IV – VIT IV – ACC IV – ACC IV
  • VIT IV – VIT IV – ACC IV – ACC IV – ACC III.

More general melding notes below. Technically you can fit ACC in ALL PIECES, should you wish. Don’t go too crazy, though… there’s an absolute max ACC melding of 20 x ACC IV or melds that total +180 ACC. It isn’t very efficient or cheap, but if you’re hell bent on never missing…

SCH BiS Discussion, Notes, Options

Right now, SS is making a bit of a comeback for SCH, so there is a bit of a split when it comes to the stat choice. While I’m part of the SS camp, Giggles is still in the DET camp. Admittedly, DET is still the most stable choice. So for the intents of this BiS, if you happen to be in the SS camp, there is a table of adjustments for that. Here’s a short summary of our thoughts…

Giggly Giggles (DET): SS pretty much equals DET in terms of dot damage now. But the pet scaling and heals are what inches me to towards DET more. It’s effects are always ‘on’ no matter the circumstance.

Mahiko San (SS): I like the reduced GCD, and a noticeable difference in the +SS proc. The high eventual crit on either set allows for quite an uptime for it, but admittedly it’s hard to maximize the proc at all times. DET is ultimately the more consistent stat.

In the end, CRIT is still king for both choices, and the BiS boils down to a difference of TWO items, so it’s not a pain to try both.

Weapon: Don’t worry about which one is BiS for you or not. 99% of the SCH’s out there SHOULD go and buy Elements.

ESO and Gordian chest both aren’t idealIf you can, invest in the third table entry. The crafted chest is really really good. If I were to personally choose, I’d shoot for the Gordian while wearing the crafted. Saves ESO and a Twine.

For non-chest body pieces, there’s a clear winner for SCH’s. A non-crit and crit variant is present on each slot.

A1S Pages: Ring > Earrings > Any filler piece for item level.

A2S Pages: Glove > Belt > 3x Gobcoat > Boots (Filler)

A3S Pages: Legs > 3x Gobtwine > Head (Filler)

A4S Pages: Gobdip (If elements) > Weapon > Shirt (Filler/SS Build)

3.0 Scholar Esoterics Buy Order

“What should I buy first with Esoterics for my SCH!?” If I was given a gil for every time I was asked…

  1. Weapon: Elements May not be everyone’s BiS, but massive value as you DPS, too.
  2. Head: Value stats, cheap, and Gordian filler drops from A3.
  3. Bracelets: A strange choice, but super value in terms of stats, since 180/190 suck.
  4. Chest: Skip it if you have crafted. HP reqs aren’t so heavy this time around.
  5. Neck: The last decent accessory you can buy.
  6. Ring: “OPTIONAL”, go crafted especially for SCH.
  7. EVERYTHING ELSE IS NON-BiS: Buy it if you need more “power”.

You can move bracelets down to after chest/head if you’re having problems with survivability (Which is primarily the SCHOLAR RESPONSIBILITY so get good, son!!!!)

SCH Melded Gear Viability? VIT Accessories?

Fabled Ring of Healing: Isn’t that good. If you need a VIT accessory, this little guy is the first to go. Here’s how I would meld…

Chrysolite Ring of Healing: VIT IV, VIT IV, CRIT IV, CRIT IV, CRIT III (CRIT to ACC if wanted)
Alternatively (for this and other accessories) VIT IV, VIT IV, VIT IV, FREE FREE.
FREE Melds: ACC (if desired) CRIT > PIE > VIT II > Anything else.

SCH Crafted 180 Left: Melding and notes

Let me remind you I value CRIT and PIE much higher than any of the other stats. ANY MELD can be substituted for Accuracy if you so wish.

Aurum Regis Crown of Healing: CRIT IV x 4 – PIE IV
Terrible. CRIT – PIE – ACC are what you want and this would only give one of them.

Astral Silk Doublet of Healing: CRIT IV – CRIT IV – ACC IV x 3
AMAZING. I’d buy this ASAP. Promeld: ACC IV x 5

Astral Silk Gloves of Healing: CRIT IV x 4 – PIE IV
Not so bad ‘caps’ crit and piety but no space for anything else.

Griffin Leather Corset of Healing: PIETY IV x 5.
A great piece. Promeld: ACC IV x 3 – PIE IV x 2.

Astral Silk Bottoms of Healing: CRIT IV x 5
Ehhh… No crit on it. So if you want ACC this isn’t the place you’d look.

Griffin Leather Boots of Healing: Piety IV x 4 – CRIT IV
Zero PIETY is a risk if you choose to go with Promeld: ACC IV x 4 – ACC III

I wont discuss melded gear on SCH just yet (due to the ordering and the existence of easily obtainable filler 190 gear, versus the currently brutally expensive 180 crafted). Will update once im done with all BiS.

    1. MND goes without saying. ACC is obviously penultimate to those SCH’s that wish to deeps. Although its sources are few (Melding, custom relic). While I agree with that JP stat, it goes against popular (but admittedly well-founded) public opinion. In my next BiS tier (3.4) i will be making a separate table for that exact type of stat itemization. I completely concur with what you’ve said.

  1. SS does so little to DoTs it may very well be as useless as piety is.
If you have money, get the relic. Or you can either get the sephEX or the Lore weapon and meld two CRIT V into it.

Personally, I’m melding acc wherever I can’t meld Crit -melding pie is kind of useless, I’ve found it better to meld either det or ss if you don’t care about acc-.
Also, pentamelded crafted boots and neck are good.

    1. I would consider melding ACC>DET>SS over PIE, but this is again purely dependent on if/how much your group relies on your deeps, + the demands of the encounter.

CRIT & PIE is still the best and safest option leading up to an A8S kill

  2. I go crit focus for my sch, but the weapon thing irks me. I have the i190 weapon from Ravana (83 crit <3) but my static is saying I should get my eso weapon (whm stats eww) because of the +2 weapon damage on it…I'm very torn here since 3.1 and new relics are right around the corner.

    1. You also have to understand the spell speed isn’t a WHM only stat anymore. It affects how much damage all DoT ticks do, including SCH DoTs going in to HW. Crit>SS is widely accepted now, with Piety under importance for progression.

  3. Why the dreadwyrm tonbans of healing… i have the pants but i personally see more scholars using the demon skirt a little loss in stats but the extra crit and det are worth it… plus who piety on a sch is helpful but not needed imo

    1. The SCH pants slot is very flexible. The observation you made is correct, but the same statement can be said for the reverse: “VIT to survive mechanics, a larger MND stat overtakes the DET in demon” etc etc

  4. Shouldn’t the BiS for hands be ironworks? When it boils down to it SCH is never really hurting for MP and the DET from ironworks not only increases heals but also increases shields. SpS is the outlying stat which ironworks has more of as well (granted I don’t know any SCH’s that gear for SpS lol).

    1. Hand slot is very iffy for SCH. It comes down to preference. My SCH partner uses the Kirimu with some ACC!

        1. Alot of options on the gloves – Kirimu, Demon – they’re basically up to what’s best in-line with your goals and needs as the SCH of your group.
